Placing a third box on the Warre Beehive

Well the time has come that I have the time to place a third box under one of my Warre Hives. I have two hives and one of them is a lot stronger that the other. The strong hive needs an additional box and within three weeks the second hive will need the additional hive box.

I once again did not smoke the hive as I removed the roof, the wood chip box, and then moved the two hive boxes at the same time. I put the third box on and reassembled the hive.  They did not even seem to care that I had moved the hive and settled down quickly after I reassembled the hive.

Adventure In Beekeeping

As I stated earlier, I became interested in beekeeping while reading an article about the loss of about thirty percent of honey bees a year.  But, to be truthful I was really afraid of bees as most people are. 

I began reading articles about honey bees and soon I was watching videos about bees on YouTube. The more I learned the more I became intrigued with these little insects. I learned that they were not aggressive but instead domicile. They will sting but only to protect their home and mostly when they were storing honey.  With the right equipment you can keep stings to just a few. Last year, my first year, I was only stung once.

I decided to only have one hive which was a mistake. Everything that I read said that you should start with two hives. The reason is if one hive does not do well you could use the stronger hive to help build up the weaker hive.  So this year I will have two hives. More about that in a later post.

Why Bees?

I started my adventure in bees from reading an article in GRIT. The one issue that caught my attention was that we are losing 30% of our bees every year and how important honey bees are to our food production. There was a request for folks to consider becoming a backyard bee keeper.


As a result I started reading everything I could on the internet as well as watching all things bees on YouTube. What I found is that those who keep bees are very open to the process and issues to keeping bees. The more I read and watched videos about bees the more I wanted to help these insects to survive and thrive. 


I noticed that those who were bee keepers really loves the bees.  These amazing insects will grow on you to the point you love to be around them as much as possible.  But most people would not want to be in the middle of 50,000 to 100,000 honey bees.
